As children, many of us idolized police officers. We were taught by our parents that police officers were there to help us in our hour of need. They wear uniforms much like superheroes, and they have an official badge. While some cops in Fort Collins, Loveland and Wellington truly are there to help and protect the community, this simplistic belief doesn’t take into account that police officers are people, too. They want to get promoted. They want to catch bad guys. They want to look good. Also, keep in mind that the police deal with hundreds of people – they see you as a potential criminal when they come into contact with you.

Police Want to Charge You With a Crime

Sheriff’s and Deputy Sheriff’s in Larimer County will often be friendly when they are talking to you. They won’t appear threatening. You may think they care about you and your well-being. This is usually not the case. They want information from you to use against you. If they make an arrest for Sexual Assault  – C.R.S. 18-3-402, or Child Abuse – C.R.S. 18-6-401, they will earn respect and accolades from their supervisor and coworkers. They don’t get that respect when they let you go. Remember – when you are contacted by police in Fort Collins, Loveland, or Estes Park, they are trying to gather information against you. They are looking for any reason to arrest and charge you with a crime.

Cops Are Human and Are Swayed by Emotion

Police are just as easily swayed by emotions as the rest of us. Recently, after a road rage incident (a guy ripped the windshield wiper off my car) I called the police. A Sheriff Deputy responded, and told me that I (the victim) would need to be charged with a crime as well, if I didn’t agree that the other guy (the nutcase who ripped off a part of my car) receive a lesser charge. This was because the other guy (the nutcase) was wearing a “Denver Firefighter” t-shirt, and claimed that I cut him off. Why would a firefighter be charged any differently than you or me? This Sheriff Deputy was swayed by a tie to local firefighters.

The police are not after the truth, and they are easily swayed by circumstances. They are looking for every chance to make an arrest and get promoted. For this reason, it is wise to only call the police if absolutely necessary. If you do call the police in Fort Collins, keep in mind that they will view you as a possible bad guy – even if you believe you are the victim of a crime.

In order to win a criminal case, it is important that you understand the mindset of your opponent. The first enemy you will face in your fight will be an officer wearing a uniform and a badge.
