1. How Do I Get My Stuff After Being Charged with a Crime of Domestic Violence in Fort Collins?

Because you are subject to a protection order / restraining order, you cannot simply return home to grab your things if you’ve been charged with a crime of Domestic Violence in Fort Collins.  You must obtain a civil standby / civil assist.  This means that a Fort Collins Police Officer or Larimer County Sheriff’s Deputy will come with you to your home and monitor you for roughly 15 minutes while you collect your belongings.  This can only take place once, so you have to move quickly and prioritize the things you need most as you pack.

2. What Happens if I Am Convicted of a Crime of Domestic Violence in Loveland?

There are two primary outcomes that result from conviction of a crime of Domestic Violence in Loveland besides the penalties that will result from the underlying offense.  The first is that you must relinquish your firearms and ammunition, even if you were convicted of a misdemeanor.  This collateral consequence will last for the rest of your life.  The other outcome is the requirement to pursue Domestic Violence treatment, which must be through a provider approved by the Domestic Violence Offender Management Board.

3. Can I Pursue Couples Therapy While My DV Case is Ongoing in Larimer County?

No – you cannot pursue couples therapy or any similar form of counseling in Larimer County.  Unfortunately, the primary reason for this is that you cannot have any contact with the alleged victim.  Couples therapy / family therapy is completely off the table until the end of your case, when the criminal protection order expires.  Even then, the victim may opt to file for a civil restraining order, which could then make it impossible to pursue therapy and ultimately reconcile with them.

4. What is Domestic Violence Treatment Like in Estes Park?

Domestic Violence treatment varies somewhat in Estes Park, depending on the treatment provider and the crime with which you have been convicted.  One thing that you can expect is that you will participate in group therapy with other people who have been convicted of similar offenses.  You can also expect that you will not be considered to have successfully completed treatment unless you accept full responsibility for your behavior.  DV treatment only ends when you demonstrate a full grasp on core competencies and take accountability for what happened – not when you fulfill any time requirements.
