You live in Larimer County and you’re speeding down I-25 towards Fort Collins, when you notice the flashing lights. You’re pulled over by the Larimer County Sheriff and receive a speeding ticket. “Oh well”, you think – “I’m moving out of state in just a couple of weeks. No need to worry about paying this ticket in Colorado!” This is simply not true. Colorado (among others) is known as a “Compact State.” This means the member states (also known as Non-Resident Violator Compact States – NRVC) support each other’s efforts at resolving traffic tickets. Your license could be in jeopardy in every other member state.

Compact States Work Together to Resolve Traffic Violations

Let’s say you used to live in Loveland, but you decided to move to sunny Florida. You settle in, and go to the DMV to get your driver’s license renewed. They look up your history and see that you have a DUI in Larimer County. Since Florida is a member of NRVC, you will have to clear up your DUI in Colorado Court and with the Colorado DMV before you are able to get your license renewed.

The only states who aren’t members of NRVC are Wisconsin, Montana, California, Oregon, Michigan and Alaska. IF you move to any other state, your traffic violations in Colorado will have an effect on your license. The state you move to could suspend your license, or simply not allow you get a new one until your traffic violations are resolved in Colorado. Even if you live in a non-member state and have a traffic offense in a member state, you could be required to post a cash bond for your offense.
