Magpul Industries, one of the largest producers of gun magazines, is relocating to Wyoming and Texas in search of constitutional gun rights. Last year, a ban was enacted which banned high-capacity magazines (any magazines which hold more than 15 rounds). The company warned legislators they would be forced to leave if the ban went into effect. Now, Colorado has lost a major employer, which results in the loss of jobs and revenue.
What is the Large-Capacity Magazine Ban?
The ban prohibits large-capacity magazines – C.R.S. 18-12-302, which are defined as magazines which holds “more than fifteen rounds of ammunition,” or “twenty-eight inches of shotgun shells.” The penalties for possessing a large-capacity magazine are steep in Larimer, Boulder, and ParkCounty: If a person “sells, transfers, or possesses a large-capacity magazine,” they commit a class 2 misdemeanor. This doesn’t mean you are required to turn in your large-capacity magazines, however. The law says a person can possess one if they owned the magazine “on July 1, 2013,” and maintained “continuous possession of the large-capacity magazine.” In other words, if you owned it on or before July 1, 2013, and you owned it the entire time, you are allowed to keep your magazine.
Magpul: Reacting to Unconstitutional Laws
It is clear why Magpul moved out of Colorado: They grew weary of our Colorado government’s intrusion into their business. Why would they stay in a state which attacks their business? We should be just as frustrated when the legislature takes away our freedoms and rights. The ban was put into effect last summer. Most people didn’t even know it went into place. Government officials succumbed to peer pressure and enforced a law which limits our constitutional right to bear arms, and has absolutely no effect on the safety of society. We need to speak up and demand our rights are protected.
Why You Need a Good Gun Rights Attorney
Our constitutional rights are being taken away slowly. It’s difficult to even see the decline of our freedom, because it happens so gradually. If your gun rights are being threatened in Fort Collins, Loveland, or Estes Park, you need to work with an experienced criminal defense attorney who has a passion for our right to bear arms. You need to work with a lawyer who has vision of protecting our country’s God-given freedoms for future generations.
