In Fort Collins and Larimer County, Attempt to Influence a Public Servant is charged when a person is accused of lying to law enforcement (public servant) to change or affect a particular outcome. Recently, an Erie police officer was charged with this crime, along with Forgery, for lying when he applied to be an officer with Erie Police. According to the report, the officer made claims about his training and accomplishments during his time in the military. However, when his military records were reviewed, there was no record of his participation with the Army Ranger, Airborne, or the Air Assault Division – all of which he claimed during the interview. He was confronted and said he would get the documentation needed. He did provide the new documents, however, there were errors on the form that made those reviewing them question the legitimacy. The case was handed over to the DA’s office and the officer was not only fired, but also charged with two felony crimes.
