In Larimer County and Fort Collins, Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor is charged when a person allows or encourages a child to break a law. A Colorado assistant principal was recently sentenced to three years of probation after he was accused of giving a minor alcohol. According to the report, the principal had invited a minor (not a student at the school he worked at) to his home to help move furniture. After the task was completed, he offered the boy a beer to drink on the porch with him. He was arrested and charged with Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor, which is exactly what he pled to.

Alcohol Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor in Larimer County, Colorado

The Colorado law definition of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor – C.R.S. 18-6-701 – is:

Any person who induces, aids, or encourages a child to violate any federal or state law, municipal or county ordinance, or court order commits contributing to the delinquency of a minor. For the purposes of this section, the term “child” means any person under the age of eighteen years.

As with the case above, allowing a child to consume alcohol (something that is only legal for a person 21 years old or older), would meet the criteria of this crime. It’s pretty cut and dry in the above situation. But, imagine you are an 18 year old who got ahold of some liquor and shared it with your 17 and 18 year old friends at a high school party. Even though it’s illegal for everyone to be drinking, because the 18 year old (the adult) provided the alcohol to the 17 year olds, then the 18 year old could be charged with this felony crime.
