In Fort Collins, Colorado, the definition of Dangerous Weapon and Illegal Weapon are found under C.R.S. 18-12-102.

Dangerous Weapon means:

  • Firearm silencer
  • Machine gun
  • Machine gun conversion device
  • Short shotgun
  • Short rifle

Illegal Weapon means:

  • Blackjack
  • Gas gun
  • Ballistic knife
  • Metallic knuckles

So, if you are caught possessing any of the above listed weapons or firearms, you will be facing charges for Possessing a Dangerous or Illegal Weapon.

Loveland Defaced Firearm Charges

There are two difference statutes in Loveland related to defaced firearms. One is Possession of a Defaced Firearm – C.R.S. 18-12-103 – and the other is Defacing a Firearm – C.R.S. 18-12-104. Defaced Firearm is defined by Colorado law as:

A firearm where the manufacturer’s serial number or other distinguishing number or identification mark has been removed, defaced, altered, or destroyed except by normal wear and tear.

Possessing a Defaced Firearm is charged when you are caught with a gun that has the identifying information removed. Defacing a Firearm is charged when you are caught actually removing the identifying information on the gun.

Penalty for Possessing a Dangerous, Illegal, or Defaced Weapon in Larimer County

In Larimer County, Possessing a Dangerous Weapon is a class 5 felony, punishable by up to 3 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections. Possessing an Illegal Weapon is a class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by up to 364 days in the Larimer County Jail.

The penalty for Possession of a Defaced Firearm or Defacing a Firearm, both class 1 misdemeanors, is up to 364 days in the Larimer County Jail.
