The Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) government agency released a letter regarding gun purchasing in Colorado that stated medical marijuana users in Fort Collins, Loveland, Estes Park and all other Colorado cities are not allowed to buy firearms. The agency declared that persons who are chronic users of drugs and/or alcohol are not permitted to purchase firearms because of the dangers associated with the use of drugs and/or alcohol and weapons.
Marijuana and Firearms Rights in Larimer County
Medical marijuana proponents all over the state have worked to appeal this decision. Arguments were made that a person who chooses to medicate a certain way should not be denied firearms under the United States Constitution. What is the point of this law? Is it really that a person who uses medical marijuana as part of a pain-relieving process would be more dangerous as a firearms owner? Is it a crackdown by the government against gun owners in general or just one more way for the government to restrict an individual’s ability to own and possess a firearm under the Second Amendment in Colorado? No matter the reasoning behind the ATF stance, both supporters of medical marijuana and individuals focused on gun rights should be concerned.
Medical Marijuana or Guns in Loveland and Wellington: The Choice is Yours
For medical marijuana users in Larimer, Boulder, or Grand County, this policy signifies an anti-medical marijuana push by the federal government in Colorado. This restriction, while not directly effecting the legality of someone’s ability to use marijuana, has an indirect consequence on an individual Colorado citizen’s right to use medical marijuana. The question people seeking to use medical marijuana will now have to ask themselves is whether they want to buy firearms or smoke pot?
More Firearm Restrictions in Fort Collins, Colorado
For gun owners, the ATF stance implies that the government is restricting an individual’s ability to purchase guns under the Second Amendment. Each time that the federal government restricts someone’s ability to buy, use, or own a firearm, all gun owners are affected. If the government begins restricting the rights of some individuals to own guns, how long will it take for the government to disapprove of the way that you are living your life and deny you the right to bear arms?
